Reading Qur’an While Menstruating
What is the ruling on reciting the Quran whilst being on your period and is it permissible to listen and correct someone else’s recitation during menstruation?
Answer
In the name of Allah, the Inspirer of truth
During hayd (menstruation), it is not permissible to recite any portion of the Qur’an with the intention of recitation. This includes moving the lips or reading aloud. However, it is permissible to read the words in the heart and to look at the verses.
It is also permissible to recite specific portions of the Qur’an if two criteria are met. Firstly, the verse itself must have the inherent meaning of supplication (du’a). Secondly, the intention of reciting should be that of du’a. For example, during hayd a woman can recite Ayatul Kursi.
There is no prohibition for a woman in hayd to listen to the Qur’an. For a teacher of the Qur’an or one who must listen to and correct another’s recitation, the ruling is that she may recite one or two words at a time when teaching.
