Cleaning one’s private parts with water (istinja’) to remove physical impurity after passing urine/stool is an integral part of personal hygiene.

Urine is categorised as a heavy impurity and must be cleaned properly. According to a hadith, negligence regarding leaving the body impure from urine droplets leads to punishment in the grave.

Besides this, a woman should keep herself as clean as possible during the days of menstruation (hayd). Therefore, a menstruating woman should use water to cleanse herself after urination.
