Does Bleeding Break the Fast
Asalam Wlkm
My 12 year old daughter started her 1st period 14.04.21 at about 5.30pm. She was fasting and I made her shower and by the time she finished it was time to break fast so she broke her fast . Does that fast count ?
Answer
In the name of Allah, the Inspirer of truth
If she continues to bleed for a minimum of 72 hours, this will be menstruation (hayd). Her fast was invalidated the moment she saw blood, even if she did not consume any food or drink thereafter until sunset. She must make up her missed fasts after Ramadan. Please visit our website for more information on menstruation and fasting.
However, if the bleeding/spotting stops before 72 hours and she does not see any additional bleeding/spotting for 15 days or more, this will be irregular bleeding (istihada). In this situation, her fast will be valid (provided she did not do anything to invalidate it before sunset) and make-up (qada) is not required.
And Allah knows best.
